London is packed with iconic landmarks, fascinating history, and world-class attractions – making it an exciting destination for families. We visit every year and I’m always on the look-out for something fun and family-friendly for us to do. But with so many options, it can be overwhelming, especially with younger children in tow. That’s where a London sightseeing tour comes in handy — offering a fun and informative way to explore the city without all the walking.
One of the best ways to experience the capital is by water. A boat trip along the River Thames gives you a fresh perspective on London’s most famous sights. And if you’re after something a little more fun than your standard boat cruise, the Horrible Histories Terrible Thames Tour is the perfect family-friendly boat tour.

This hilarious, fast-paced and educational boat trip brings London’s history to life in the silliest (and goriest!) way possible — ideal for children and grown-ups alike.
Whether you’re a first time visitor to London or you’ve been many times before, a sightseeing tour is the best way to see the city. Looking for a sightseeing cruise with a twist? The Horrible Histories Terrible Thames Tour is a fun, fast-paced and educational boat trip through London’s most famous landmarks — with a gruesome, silly, and hilarious Horrible Histories spin. ToggleWhat is the Horrible Histories Terrible Thames Tour?
Created by the team behind Horrible Histories, this 45-minute family-friendly river cruise takes you along the Thames with two live actors performing stories from London’s gory past.
The clever script is written by Terry Deary and the show’s director, Neal Foster. You’ll hear tales of pirates, kings, executioners, and explosive events – all told via ‘Billy’ and his teacher, with jokes suitable for all ages. It’s classic Horrible Histories humour with poo and fart references and gruesome deaths. You’ll hear lots of memorable facts as you pass London’s most iconic sights.

The two performers (dressed in costume) walk up and down the boat’s central aisle, using sound effects, props, and plenty of theatrical energy. They had us giggling throughout their performance which is fun, lively, and packed with quick-fire history. Everyone is encouraged to join in with songs and clapping, which makes it especially fun for younger ones.
What You’ll See on the Horrible Histories Thames Tour
We cruised past London’s most famous sights as the actors cleverly weaved each location into their stories. The script is cleverly written, so even adults will learn something new. There’s a mix of humour, fact, and gross history that keeps everyone engaged.

Some of the sights we saw were:
- The Tower of London
- Shakespeare’s Globe
- Cleopatra’s Needle
- London Bridge
- HMS Belfast
- The London Eye
- The Houses of Parliament
- The Savoy Hotel
- Tower Bridge
- The Golden Hind

Is the Horrible Histories Thames Tour suitable for children?
Yes — this is definitely aimed at children and families. Kids aged 5 to 12 will probably enjoy it the most, although teenagers with a sense of humour will still find it entertaining – mine did! The fun, panto-style performance style and simple historical references are very accessible, even for younger kids.
There are toilets on board and the tour is buggy- and scooter-friendly. These can be stored on the lower deck while the show takes place upstairs (accessible only by stairs) during dry weather.
If you’re searching for the best family attractions in London, this is an easy and affordable activity for a day out.
