Salthouse Fields Playground, Clevedon
Salthouse Road Clevedon Avon BS21 7TU
The Salthouse Fields is a much-loved family park in North Somerset and is a brilliant option if you’re visiting Clevedon with kids. The huge open green space is perfect for ball games, picnics and letting off steam. While the path around it is good for youngsters on scooters. There’s even a park run every weekend!
The playground has separate play areas for toddlers and older children.
It’s easy to combine with Clevedon seafront, making this one of the best free play parks in Somerset for a full day out.
Great for: toddlers, mixed ages

Portishead Lake Grounds Playground

Portishead Lake Grounds is one of the most popular play parks in Somerset. It’s ideally located beside the boating lake and lawns near the Esplanade.
Portishead Lake Grounds is a fantastic choice for families and there’s equipment for a range of ages, along with wide paths for bikes and scooters. There are plenty of ducks and swans to spot on the lake too.
There’s a café, toilets and plenty of picnic space, making it ideal for longer visits and free family days out in Somerset. It’s a great choice for families with children of different ages.

Apex Park is one of the best large play parks in Somerset and a real destination playground. Located in Highbridge, it offers modern equipment, wide paths for bikes and scooters, and lots of open green space.
Apex Park Playground has a large children’s play area, with an outdoor gym, and a fishing lake nearby. The walk around the lake from the car park takes around 30 minutes.
It’s particularly good for mixed-age siblings and works well for longer visits thanks to the walking routes around the park.

Royal Victoria Park is one of the best playgrounds in Somerset, especially if you’re visiting Bath with children. The large play area caters for a wide age range and sits within beautiful historic parkland.
Beyond the playground, Victoria Park has wide open lawns, a skate park, tennis courts and a café, making it easy to spend a full morning or afternoon here. Plus, the central location means it’s an easy walk of Bath city centre.
Another highlight of Victoria Park is the botanical gardens which are also free to explore.
Victoria Park is perfect for combining playtime with a picnic or a walk, making it one of the top family-friendly parks in Somerset.

Wells Recreation Ground
Wells, BA5
One of the most popular playgrounds in Wells is the Recreation Ground near the Bishop’s Palace. It’s a spacious, free play area to visit with kids in The Mendips.
Wells Recreation Ground is ideally located close to the city centre, making it an ideal stop during a walk through this charming historic city.
The park features an excellent children’s play area with equipment designed for both pre-schoolers and older children, including swings, a roundabout and a seesaw. There is also a large wooden fort where children can climb, explore and let their imaginations run wild.
The play space is generously sized and fully enclosed, with just one entrance and exit, which helps it feel secure and easy to supervise.
You’ll also find wooden picnic tables and benches, plus gym equipment and a park ideal for ball games, making it an excellent day out with kids in Wells.

The Ninesprings section of the park is its most accessible and popular area, with gentle footpaths through semi-ancient woodland and wildflower meadows beside waterfalls and waterways.
Within Ninesprings you’ll find a children’s play area and natural play features that make it a great place for kids to explore and burn off energy during a day out in South Somerset. The play area and nearby woodland trails are perfect for families who want a mix of structured play and open-air nature time.
There’s also a family-friendly café on site — Ninesprings Café — offering hot and cold drinks, snacks and seating inside or out, along with toilets and baby-changing facilities, making it easy to make a morning or afternoon of your visit. Parking is available nearby in local car parks, including Goldenstones (pay and display) and free short-stay options.
Note: The play area at Yeovil Country Park has been refurbished or upgraded in recent seasons with a nature-inspired design to offer greater accessibility and inclusive play opportunities for children of different ages and abilities. Ninesprings is a great option for a free day out in South Somerset.
