With options ranging from 45 minutes to a several hours, it’s a relaxing and convenient way to explore the area. Having the ability to hop on and off with a Freedom of the Lake ticket, makes it an ideal way to explore Lake Windermere car-free.

Paddleboard or Kayak on Lake Windermere
Hire a paddleboard or kayak and enjoy a peaceful paddle across the lake’s crystal-clear waters. Several rental shops operate in Bowness and Ambleside, offering beginner-friendly equipment and safety gear.
We used Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre based on the West side of Lake Windermere at Rayrigg Meadow. We were given a safety talk and floatation aids to wear, before being let loose on the lake!

Visit Bowness-on-Windermere and the World of Beatrix Potter

Don’t miss The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere, a magical experience for younger visitors. This charming attraction brings Peter Rabbit and his friends to life through lifelike models, interactive exhibits, and beautiful gardens. It’s a must for fans of the books, tv series and films.

Visit the Playpark at Millerground, Windermere
For families visiting Lake Windermere, the Millerground play park is a must. Located right on the lakeshore near Bowness, this well-equipped play area features climbing frames, swings, and open grassy spaces—perfect for letting kids run wild while parents relax with a view of the water. There’s a cabin selling refreshments there too.
With direct lake access for paddling and picnic tables dotted about, it’s one of the best free things to do at Lake Windermere with kids.
If you have your own paddleboard, there are steps to the shore where there’s an ideal spot to launch from.
Convenient parking at Rayrigg Meadows (LA23 1BP) and scenic walking paths make it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

On a warm summer’s day, wild swimming in Lake Windermere is unbeatable. Popular swimming spots include Fell Foot Park and Millerground, both of which offer easy lake access and shallow entry points ideal for families. Always swim safely and follow local advice on water conditions.

We hired a couple of self-drive motor boats from Brockhole on Windermere and can’t recommend it highly enough. Self-drive boats are one of the best things to do in Windermere for the whole family to enjoy. The boats carry up to five people, are easy to drive and you can hire them by the hour.

Visit Brockhole on Windermere
Brockhole is the Lake District’s official visitor centre, but it’s so much more than that. With tree-top nets, zip wires, archery, mini golf, and an adventure playground, it’s a dream day out for families.
There’s also an art gallery, café, and stunning gardens that overlook the lake. Ideal for an all-in-one outing with kids of all ages.

There’s paid parking on site, but arrive early as it gets very busy, especially on weekends and school holidays.

Visit Hill Top House – Beatrix Potter’s Cottage
For families visiting Lake Windermere, Hill Top House is one of the most enchanting stops in the area. This historic 17th-century farmhouse was once the home of beloved children’s author Beatrix Potter, and it’s been preserved by the National Trust to reflect how it was during her lifetime.
Step into the very rooms that inspired famous tales like The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, with original furniture, artwork, and personal belongings creating a storybook atmosphere. The garden feels like it’s leapt off the pages of her illustrations—bursting with colour and full of charm.
It’s a perfect family-friendly outing for those looking to combine literature, nature, and local history during their Lake District adventure.
Bonus: There’s a cosy coffee cabin in Beatrix Potter’s orchard, and children’s games on the lawn.
Please note: the National Trust car park at Hilltop is small, so I advise you arrive early, or later on in the day.
