Cheddar Gorge offers a range of family-friendly activities. From cliff-top walks to spotting wildlife, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained. Whether you walk, drive or climb your way through it, the scenery is breathtaking.

  • Cliff-Top Circular Walk – A moderate 4-mile (6.4 km) circular walk offering stunning views of the gorge and surrounding Somerset countryside. Suitable for children aged 5+ with breaks.

  • Feral Goats – Keep your eyes peeled for the famous goats grazing along the cliffs.

  • Wildlife Watching – Spot peregrine falcons, kestrels, buzzards, and seasonal flowers like the Cheddar Pink in June/July.

The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is the only remaining producer of authentic Cheddar cheese in the village of Cheddar. This working dairy is located right next to Gough’s Cave. It’s a must-visit for food-loving families, the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company allows you to see how the famous Cheddar cheese is made.

  • Live Cheese-Making Demonstrations – Watch cheesemakers at work from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm daily.

  • Cheese Tasting – Sample a range of local Cheddar cheeses, including some matured in the caves nearby.

  • Shop – Take home your favorite cheeses to enjoy later.

This experience is perfect for kids who love seeing food made from scratch, and for parents who want a taste of Somerset’s culinary heritage.

There is also a shop where you can sample different types of Cheddar, including cheese that has been matured inside the caves. The high humidity and constant temperature inside the caves create perfect conditions for ageing cheese.

Cheddar Reservoir Family Walk

For a gentler outdoor activity, the Cheddar Reservoir walk is ideal for all ages:

  • Distance: Approx. 2 miles / 3.5 km

  • Terrain: Flat, wide paths suitable for pushchairs, bikes, and wheelchairs.

  • Highlights: Enjoy a peaceful walk, spot birds, and have a picnic by the water.

There are two free car parks and plenty of benches and picnic spots. Children love watching birds, spotting boats and walking or cycling safely away from traffic.

Strawberry Line Cycling with Kids

For families who love cycling, the Strawberry Line is a traffic-free route from Cheddar to Yatton.

  • Distance: 9 miles one-way

  • Surface: Smooth, perfect for children’s bikes and scooters.

  • Scenery: Pass through countryside, old railway bridges, and small villages.
