Ladye Bay to Walton-in-Gordano Circular Walk

ToggleThis circular walk from Clevedon combines dramatic coastal scenery with peaceful Somerset countryside. The route follows the coast path past Ladye Bay, where rugged limestone cliffs drop down to the rocky shoreline and wide views stretch across the Bristol Channel towards Wales. After enjoying the coastal section, the walk turns inland to the small village of Walton-in-Gordano. Before looping back towards Clevedon through woodland and over Clevedon Golf Course.
Along the way you’ll experience some of the best contrasts in North Somerset walking: hidden coves, open sea views, rolling pastures and tranquil rural landscapes. It’s a relatively short circular route but one that packs in plenty of variety, making it perfect for a relaxed coastal adventure.
Walk Information:
Things to Note
After rain, the path through the field gets very muddy. Horses graze the area during some of the year and they can make it muddy as well. Keep dogs on a lead around grazing animals.
Steep cliff drops on the coastal path so beware if you’re with young children or letting your dog off their lead.
Ladye Bay to Walton-in-Gordano Circular Walk Directions
From the car park in Bay Road, head down the road and take the first set of steps on your left, to the coast path.
Turning right at the bottom you’ll soon have your first glimpse of Ladye Bay. There is a view point if you want to scramble down the track for a closer look. Otherwise, carry on walking to another set of steps which lead down to the secluded rocky cove. Ladye bay has views over the Bristol Channel to Wales.
Families will enjoy Ladye Bay for rock climbing, hunting for sea glass, rock pooling and paddling (if the tide is in). Ladye Bay is also a great spot for a picnic with views over to Wales and Clevedon Pier to the South. This area is popular with dog walkers too.
Continue walking North along the coast path (towards Portishead). Round the first corner you’ll catch a glimpse of Clevedon Pier in the distance through the trees.
After zig-zagging around a couple of steep corners, the path will eventually straighten out a bit.
Along the way are several small paths going down to the rocky shore which are used by fishermen. You may see them at high tide. If you decide to explore, you’ll discover rock pools and a rock arch.
Always keep a close eye on children near the water along this part of the coast, the currents are notorious.
You’ll need a decent pair of shoes if you decide to clamber over the rocks.
Continuing on along the coast path, you’ll walk past bright yellow gorse bushes which often form tunnels along the path.
Eventually you’ll reach Roger’s bench – a great place to stop and enjoy the peace with a great view.
Further up the coast you’ll see the Severn Bridges if the weather is clear.
Ahead, the path splits with the right-hand turn going into a field via a gate. You’re leaving the coast path now and heading towards the village of Walton-in-Gordano.
Dogs must be put on a lead for this section. There are often horses grazing here. Please keep to the track which follows the hedge/wall on your left and goes steeply uphill – fortunately this hilly section is short.
In the spring, parts of the field is covered with bluebells.
After rain, the top half of this field become very wet and muddy so a decent pair of waterproof shoes are a must.
In the top corner, go through a gate, then a little further on another gate which brings you out onto the coast road.
Turn right here, and walk along the verge passing Clevedon Golf Course on your right-hand side.
Extension to Walton Common
Round the corner, there is a footpath on the opposite side of the road going up to Walton Common. There are usually cars parked in the layby at the start of this path. If you want to extend your walk, head up this path to explore the common.
Otherwise, continue along the road until you reach Spring Head Cottage on your right-hand side. As the name suggests, there is a spring here and this is where you turn right. You’ll notice the public footpath sign to the left of the cottage.
Head along the path then up a few stone steps into Rock Wood. Stay on the path as you head up Castle Hill.
As the path flattens out you’ll come to a gate with a sign warning of golfers. Exit the woods and keep to the right-hand side of the green at Clevedon Golf Course. You’ll see the top of Walton Castle ahead through the trees.
Join the track heading downhill to the right and go through the gate. Ignore the road going up to your left – this is a private drive going up to Walton Castle. Instead, keep walking downhill.
You’ll pass Clevedon Golf Club on your right. Don’t turn right here, instead keep on ahead, following the road downhill until you exit the golf course. Beware of golfers on either side – you may need to wait until they’ve taken their shot.
As you exit Clevedon Golf Club, you’ll come out at the junction of Castle Road, Holly Lane and The Avenue. Turn right here and cross over to the pavement on the other side of the road. Walk all the way down Castle road until you reach Walton St Mary Church.
Turn right into Bay Road where you started the walk.
Pop along to Number 16 Bay Road, Osborne Community Café where you can enjoy refreshments including coffe and cake and light lunches.
