If you’re searching for the best places to visit in autumn in the UK, you don’t necessarily need to travel far. There are some fantastic places to visit in England in autumn, with colourful woodland, historic estates and beautiful scenery right here in the South West.
Here are five beautiful destinations to add to your autumn bucket list.
Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail, Gloucestershire
Address: Beechenhurst Visitor Centre, Speech House Road, Coleford, Gloucestershire, GL16 7EL
The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is a fantastic place for an autumn woodland walk, combining beautiful forest scenery with sculptures and artworks hidden among the trees. For us, it’s an easy drive from Somerset across the Severn Bridge.
It’s a great option for families because there’s plenty to look out for along the way. Children can search for the sculptures, explore the woodland and enjoy the changing colours as autumn takes hold.
The forest floor becomes covered in fallen leaves, making it a lovely place to get outside and enjoy the season. If you’re looking for autumn walks in Gloucestershire, this is one to add to your list.
The Sculpture Trail offers something a little different from a traditional woodland walk, giving children an extra reason to keep exploring. Download the map before heading off.
Room on the Broom trail at Beechenhurst, Forest Of Dean
Families with younger children may also enjoy the Room on the Broom trail at Beechenhurst, inspired by the much-loved story by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.
The themed trail brings the story into the woodland, giving children a fun activity to follow as they explore. It’s a lovely way to combine a family walk with something familiar and engaging for little ones.
The trail was scheduled to run until 31 October 2026, so check the official website for the latest information before visiting, particularly if you’re planning a trip during October half-term.
You can even combine the two Trails and look out for the artworks dotted around the forest.
Good to know: The Sculpture Trail itself is free to explore, although parking charges apply at Beechenhurst. Facilities include a café, toilets, picnic areas and a lovely wooden play area. Check current parking charges and trail information before travelling.
Family tip: Allow extra time for the children to explore the sculptures and enjoy the trail at their own pace. You could finish your visit with a picnic, cafe stop or some time in the play area.

There is Go Ape at Beechenhurst too, read our Go Ape Forest of Dean Review for more information.
Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire
Address: Forestry England, Westonbirt, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, GL8 8QS
Westonbirt Arboretum is one of the best places to see autumn colours in the South West. Famous for its spectacular collection of trees, the arboretum comes alive in autumn as the leaves turn shades of red, orange and gold.
It’s a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring the woodland paths and admiring the changing scenery. There are different areas to discover, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs and enjoy the fresh autumn air.
The colourful Japanese maples are particularly impressive, making Westonbirt a popular destination for anyone hoping to see beautiful autumn foliage in the South West.
Family trails at Westonbirt
Westonbirt is also a brilliant option for family days out in autumn, especially when seasonal trails are running.
Family activities have included the Magic of Maples trail and a Room on the Broom trail. These give children something extra to look out for while exploring the trees and woodland paths.
The Magic of Maples trail encourages children to discover the trees and their changing leaves, while the Room on the Broom trail offers a story-themed woodland adventure.
Check the official website for the current trail programme and dates before visiting, as seasonal activities can change.
Good to know: Westonbirt can be particularly busy during peak autumn colour and October half-term. Check admission prices, parking arrangements and accessibility information before travelling. There is a cafe, play area and Tree Top Walkway.
Family tip: Let the children choose their favourite tree or make up an autumn scavenger hunt to enjoy as you walk.

Stourhead is a beautiful National Trust landscape garden and a wonderful place to visit in autumn. Its famous lake, woodland paths and classical temples create a stunning setting, particularly when the surrounding trees begin to change colour.
One of the highlights is the view across the lake, where the autumn colours are reflected in the water. It’s a lovely place to take a leisurely walk, enjoy the scenery and spend time outdoors with the family.
The paths take you through different parts of the landscape, offering plenty of opportunities to stop and appreciate the surroundings. If you’re looking for beautiful places to visit in autumn, Stourhead is well worth considering.
Sitting on the border of Somerset and Wiltshire, it’s an excellent choice for a seasonal day out in the wider South West.

Even without a special event, there’s plenty to enjoy. Children can look for wildlife, spot interesting leaves and explore the paths around the lake.
Good to know: Allow plenty of time to explore the gardens at a relaxed pace. Check current opening times, admission arrangements and accessibility information before setting off.
Family tip: Take your time walking around the lake and stop to enjoy the views. It’s a lovely spot for family photographs when the autumn colours are at their best.

The grounds offer opportunities for a seasonal walk, with woodland paths and plenty of natural scenery to enjoy. You can combine a wander around the estate with views of the impressive house and time exploring the gardens.
For families looking for places to visit in autumn near Bristol, Tyntesfield is a great option. It’s close enough for a day trip while still offering a countryside escape from the city.Â

Autumn trails at Tyntesfield
Tyntesfield often organises family activities during school holidays, including seasonal trails that encourage children to explore the grounds.

Good to know: Opening times and access to the house, gardens and estate may vary. Check the National Trust website before travelling, especially during school holidays.
Family tip: Leave time to explore the grounds rather than concentrating only on the house. The outdoor spaces are a lovely part of the visit. There are a couple of play areas for children dotted around the estate. Our favourite one is in the woods.

Tips for autumn days out with the family
A little planning can help you make the most of your autumn adventure.
Wear layers. Autumn weather can change throughout the day, so take coats and comfortable walking shoes.
Check the trail details. Seasonal family trails often run for limited periods, particularly during October half-term.
Allow plenty of time. Children may want to stop to look at leaves, explore the woodland or take photographs.
Check admission and parking. Some places charge for entry or parking, while seasonal activities may have an additional cost.
Take snacks and drinks. A flask of hot chocolate can be a welcome treat on a chilly autumn walk.
Look for wildlife. Encourage children to spot birds, insects and other signs of autumn as you explore.
Check the weather forecast. Waterproof coats and suitable footwear can make a big difference if the paths are muddy.
Have a backup plan. If the weather turns wet, check whether there are indoor attractions nearby or activities at your chosen destination.
