  • Procession starts at 6 pm prompt.

The procession has the reputation for being Europe’s largest illuminated carnival parade, and the
oldest UK carnival. The atmosphere is incredible.

The fun starts early on Bridgwater Carnival Day. From 10am the streets echo with the sounds of live music, street theatre, marching bands and fun for the whole family.

After the carnival procession finishes there is a unique firework display held on the High Street called ‘squibbing’. It gets VERY busy in this area and squibbing is viewed entirely at your own risk. Squibbing is something very unique to Bridgwater. Squibbing is the simultaneous firing of lots of large fireworks (“squibs”). Many people come to Bridgwater just to see the squibbing as it is an event that can be seen nowhere else on the planet.

In the region of 150 “Squibbers” are involved, typically members of the Carnival clubs. The Squibbers line the Bridgwater High Street (in a line of two wide) and all light their squibs at the same time. The effect is bright light being fired into the air along the road in one great long trail of fire.

The Squib itself is a large firework, strapped to a cosh (a solid block of wood which is attached to a large pole). The Squibber holds the squib at arms length above their head with the firework facing toward the sky.

The Squibbing Display is programmed to commence 30 minutes after the last procession entry crosses the finish line.

Top Tips for visiting a Firework Display and Bonfire Night Event

  • Pre-book your tickets early because most places will sell out quickly. Keep an eye on the website or social media pages for when tickets are released and book in advance.
  • Ear defenders may be useful for young children to enjoy the fireworks.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear as these are evening events, taking place outside, after dark in winter.
  • Arrive in plenty of time. Give yourself time to park the car and walk to the event. Some venues have room for disabled parking only. Go local if you can and leave the car at home.
  • Check what time the gate opens – usually about an hour before fireworks start.
  • It is a good idea to bring a torch with you because the event takes place when it’s dark, so it’s useful to have extra lighting. Some children bring glow sticks!
  • Check with the venue how accessible the site is before you book.
  • Check with the venue whether they allow you to bring your own sparklers. Many venues don’t.
  • Bring money and allow extra time for a hot drink and food, most venues will be selling hot food, drink and sweets.
